Research Areas

SAFE Journal of One Health is committed to promoting interdisciplinary research that recognises the interconnected nature of human, animal, plant, and environmental health.

Through the One Health framework, the journal seeks to advance scientific knowledge, innovative solutions, and evidence-based policies that contribute to sustainable development, environmental resilience, food security, and global well-being.

Overview

The journal welcomes contributions from diverse scientific disciplines and encourages collaboration across sectors to address complex challenges affecting health and sustainability worldwide. The following research areas represent the core scientific domains covered by the journal.

Section I — One Health and Public Health

This section focuses on research that advances understanding of the interconnections among human, animal, plant, and environmental health within the One Health framework. Topics include public health, epidemiology, disease prevention, health promotion, community health, occupational health, health systems, environmental determinants of health, and population-based interventions. The section encourages interdisciplinary studies that address emerging health challenges, strengthen health resilience, and support sustainable development through integrated approaches that bridge traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Section II — Animal Health and Veterinary Sciences

This section covers all aspects of animal health, veterinary medicine, livestock production, wildlife health, and aquatic animal systems. Research addressing disease surveillance, animal welfare, veterinary public health, zoonotic disease prevention, animal nutrition, and sustainable livestock management is particularly encouraged. The journal welcomes studies that enhance understanding of the role of animals in ecosystem functioning, food systems, and human well-being while supporting the principles of One Health and sustainable resource management.

Section III — Environmental Health and Sustainability

This section is dedicated to research examining the interactions between environmental conditions and the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. Topics include environmental pollution, toxicology, waste management, environmental chemistry, ecosystem degradation, environmental monitoring, natural resource conservation, and sustainable environmental practices. Studies investigating environmental risks and innovative solutions that improve ecosystem resilience and environmental quality are particularly welcome.

Section IV — Agriculture, Food Systems, and Soil Health

This section focuses on sustainable agricultural systems and their contribution to food security, environmental sustainability, and human health. Topics include crop production, agroecology, soil science, soil biodiversity, nutrient management, regenerative agriculture, carbon sequestration, food systems, precision agriculture, and sustainable land use. Research exploring the relationships between agriculture, nutrition, ecosystem services, climate adaptation, and One Health outcomes is strongly encouraged.

Section V — Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Conservation

This section addresses the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss on health, ecosystems, and sustainable development. Topics include climate adaptation, climate resilience, conservation biology, biodiversity protection, ecosystem restoration, habitat management, ecological sustainability, and environmental change. The journal welcomes studies that examine how climate-related and ecological challenges affect disease dynamics, food systems, ecosystem services, and societal well-being, as well as strategies for mitigation and adaptation.

Section VI — Infectious Diseases, Zoonoses, and Antimicrobial Resistance

This section publishes research related to infectious diseases affecting humans, animals, and ecosystems. Areas of interest include zoonotic diseases, pathogen transmission, disease ecology, outbreak investigation, disease surveillance, pandemic preparedness, biosecurity, antimicrobial resistance, and infection control. Studies that improve understanding of disease emergence and promote integrated approaches to disease prevention and management within the One Health framework are particularly encouraged.

Section VII — Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies

This section focuses on the application of innovative technologies to address challenges in health, agriculture, and environmental management. Topics include artificial intelligence, machine learning, remote sensing, geographic information systems, bioinformatics, digital health, big data analytics, environmental monitoring technologies, precision agriculture, and decision-support systems. The journal welcomes studies demonstrating how emerging technologies can improve scientific understanding, resource management, policy development, and sustainable decision-making.

Section VIII — Policy, Governance, and Sustainable Development

This section explores the role of policy, governance, education, and stakeholder engagement in advancing One Health and sustainability goals. Topics include health policy, environmental governance, risk assessment, international cooperation, sustainable development, science communication, capacity building, and implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Research that bridges science, policy, and practice to support evidence-based decision-making and societal resilience is particularly encouraged.
