Submit Your Manuscript

A walkthrough of each section of the SAFE Journal of One Health online submission form, to help you complete your submission accurately and efficiently.

Keep this page open alongside the submission form as you work through it. The form is organised into seven sections as outlined below. Once all required information is provided, the submission system will compile your files into a PDF and send it to the journal.

Log in to Editorial Manager and click Submit New Manuscript to begin. Not sure if you're ready? Review the submission requirements before you start. To respond to a technical check request, follow the instructions in the email you received from SJOH.

Step 1 — Choose Your Article Category

Follow the on-screen instructions to select the appropriate article type:

  • Research Article: presents the results of original primary research, including quantitative and qualitative studies, methods and software studies, systematic reviews, and other work.
  • Clinical Trial: prospectively assigns human participants to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes.
  • Registered Report Protocol: presents a study's rationale and proposed methodology for data collection and analysis. Peer-reviewed to ensure that the planned research will meet SJOH publication criteria.
  • Registered Report: primary research articles describing findings from a study pre-registered as a Registered Report Protocol. Available only as a follow-up to a published SJOH Registered Report Protocol.
  • Lab Protocol: describes verified methodologies and consists of a protocol posted to the protocols.io platform together with a peer-reviewed SJOH article.
  • Study Protocol: describes detailed plans for research projects that have not yet produced results.

All primary research submissions are assessed against the same publication criteria, but may require slightly different information in the submission form.

Step 2 — Upload Your Files

Upload each of the following submission files individually:

For each uploaded file, select the matching Item Type from the dropdown menu. Enter or adjust the auto-filled description for each file in the Description field.

Figures

Upload figures in TIFF or EPS format, at a resolution of 300–600 ppi, and no larger than 10 MB in size. Before uploading, use NAAS to confirm that the figures meet our requirements.

LaTeX

Upload LaTeX manuscripts in PDF format. If the article is accepted for publication, the .tex source files will be required at that stage.

Preprint PDF

SJOH offers the option to have your submission forwarded to bioRxiv or medRxiv for consideration as a preprint. You will have an opportunity to opt in on the Additional Information screen. You may upload a preprint PDF now using the Preprint PDF item type, or the system can automatically compile one from your submission files.

Step 3 — General Details

Research Area

Select the category provided that most closely reflects the research area covered in the manuscript.

Keywords

Add keywords to assist with the processing of your manuscript (optional). Ensure you add concise, accurate keywords at this stage as you will not have an opportunity to make changes later.

Step 4 — Reviewer Preferences

You may provide the names of any Editors or reviewers who should not assess the submission, along with the reason for each objection. Make sure to clearly indicate whether the individual is an Editor in the explanation.

The editorial team will honour these preferences provided they do not compromise the objective and thorough evaluation of the submission.

Step 5 — Declarations and Statements

Mandatory Confirmations

Tick the boxes to confirm that you have read and agree with the five required statements concerning SJOH Editorial and Publishing Policies:

US Government Employee

State whether any of the authors are employees of the US Government. If accepted, the article will carry a CC0 licence.

Financial Disclosure

Describe the sources of funding that supported the work, if any, and indicate whether they played a role at any point in the research or publication process. To draft the statement, consult the disclosure of funding sources policy. This information will appear in the published article if accepted. Ensure it is detailed and accurate.

Competing Interests Statement

Declare any author affiliations or relationships that could be viewed as potential competing interests. To draft the statement, consult the competing interests policy. This information will appear in the published article if accepted.

Ethics Statement

If the study made use of human or animal subjects and/or tissue, you must provide an ethics statement. Ensure this information exactly matches the ethics statement included in the manuscript and that it meets our reporting requirements for human subjects research and animal research.

Figure Compliance

Confirm that the figures comply with our image preparation guidelines, including those relating to image manipulation.

Figures Reproduced from Third-Party Sources

If any of the images in the submission are under copyright or were adapted from copyrighted images, provide the following details:

  • Permissions received from the copyright holder to publish under a CC BY licence
  • Where the image appears in the manuscript and how it is used (e.g. visualised, reproduced)
  • For any adapted images, upload a copy of the original figure on the Attach Files screen

Dual Publication

State whether any elements of the manuscript have been published previously or are under consideration for publication elsewhere. If yes, provide full details in case the journal needs to consider copyright issues.

Thematic Collections and Calls for Papers

If you are submitting in response to a call for papers in a specific topic area, enter the title of the call in the space provided.

Suggested Editors

Recommend 2–5 Academic Editors from the Editorial Board whom you consider qualified to handle the submission.

New Taxon Names

If the paper describes a new taxon, provide its name. Ensure that the manuscript includes the required nomenclature and identification details.

Data Availability Statement

Use the guidance below to construct your Data Availability Statement. This information will appear in the article if accepted.

  • Confirm whether all data reported in the manuscript are publicly accessible. SJOH requires authors to deposit all reported data and related metadata in a suitable public repository, unless already provided in the submission. See the data reporting guidelines.
  • Describe in full sentences where the data can be found, using the in-system instructions to draft a suitable statement.
  • Indicate whether the data will be available in a repository upon acceptance or whether you require journal assistance.

Publication Fees

Follow the in-system instructions to specify how payment will be handled if the manuscript is accepted for publication. Editors and reviewers have no access to payment information, and your ability to pay does not influence the decision to publish.

Authors seeking fee assistance must apply at submission using the form in the submission system. Read more about publication fees and fee assistance options.

Preprint Status

Indicate whether your manuscript is currently posted on a preprint server. If so, provide the DOI or identifier.

Group Authors and Consortia

If your author list includes a group author or consortium, provide the name here.

Step 6 — Notes to the Editorial Office

Enter any comments you would like to send to the journal office. These notes will not be visible to Editors or reviewers, and will not appear in the published article if accepted.

If this manuscript has been returned to you with a request for corrections or clarifying information, provide your response here as directed in the email you received from the journal.

Step 7 — Manuscript Metadata

The submission system will extract details from the manuscript to populate the following information. Verify that everything is correct and fill in any missing fields:

  • Title
  • Abstract
  • Author list (see instructions below)
  • Funding information

Author List

Enter each author's name, email address, institutional affiliation, and contributions. Ensure authors are listed in the same order as in the manuscript. Do not list group authors here — provide their names in the manuscript and in the group author question on the Additional Information screen.

Corresponding author

The submitting author is automatically added to the author list and assigned the role of corresponding author in the submission system. If this author will not be available for an extended period, please notify sjoh@safesociety.org.

You may designate different corresponding authors on the manuscript who will receive post-publication correspondence if the submission is accepted.

Changing the corresponding author

To transfer the role to another author in the list, click the pencil icon next to the author's name and check This is the corresponding author.

Read more about designating corresponding authors and corresponding author responsibilities.

Finalise and Dispatch

Once all required information has been provided, click Build PDF for Approval on the final screen. The system will compile the submission files into a PDF for your review. Click Approve to send it to the journal.

You will receive a confirmation message with a manuscript number to track the progress of your submission.

Not ready to send yet? You can save your progress and return later. To continue, sign into the submission system and click Submissions Waiting for Author's Approval on the main menu.
