SAFE Journal of One Health is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing knowledge at the interface of human, animal, plant, and environmental health.
The journal embraces the One Health concept, recognising that the health of people, animals, ecosystems, and the environment is closely interconnected and essential for achieving sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and global well-being.
Overview
SJOH provides a multidisciplinary platform for the publication of high-quality original research articles, reviews, short communications, case studies, technical reports, perspectives, and policy analyses that address contemporary challenges affecting health, sustainability, food systems, biodiversity, and environmental resilience. The journal particularly encourages research that promotes collaboration across scientific disciplines and sectors to develop integrated solutions for emerging global issues, including infectious diseases, climate change, environmental degradation, food insecurity, antimicrobial resistance, ecosystem disruption, and sustainable resource management.
The journal welcomes contributions from researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders working in public health, veterinary sciences, environmental sciences, agriculture, soil sciences, ecology, conservation, biotechnology, data science, and related disciplines. Through the dissemination of rigorous scientific evidence and innovative approaches, SJOH aims to support informed decision-making, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable, and resilient future for people, animals, and the planet.
Section I — One Health and Public Health
This section focuses on research that advances the understanding of the interconnected relationships among human, animal, plant, and environmental health through the One Health framework. The journal welcomes studies addressing public health challenges, disease prevention, health promotion, epidemiology, health systems, occupational health, environmental determinants of health, and community-based interventions. Contributions that integrate multiple disciplines to improve population health, reduce health disparities, and support sustainable development are particularly encouraged. Research examining the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of health and their implications for policy and practice also falls within the scope of this section.
Section II — Animal Health and Veterinary Sciences
This section publishes research related to the health, welfare, and management of domestic animals, livestock, wildlife, and aquatic species. Topics of interest include veterinary medicine, animal diseases, disease surveillance, animal nutrition, animal production systems, wildlife conservation medicine, and veterinary public health. Studies investigating the role of animals in disease transmission, ecosystem functioning, and sustainable food systems are especially welcome. The section also encourages interdisciplinary research that strengthens the links between veterinary sciences, public health, environmental sustainability, and global One Health initiatives.
Section III — Environmental Health and Sustainability
This section is dedicated to understanding how environmental factors influence the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. Areas of interest include environmental pollution, toxicology, ecosystem degradation, environmental monitoring, waste management, natural resource conservation, environmental risk assessment, environmental chemistry, and sustainable environmental management. The journal encourages studies that examine the impacts of anthropogenic activities on ecological and public health, as well as innovative approaches to environmental restoration and sustainability. Research contributing to healthier environments and resilient ecosystems is highly valued.
Section IV — Agriculture, Food Systems, and Soil Health
This section welcomes research addressing sustainable agricultural production, food security, food systems, soil health, land management, and agricultural innovation. Topics may include crop science, agroecology, precision agriculture, soil biodiversity, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, sustainable farming practices, regenerative agriculture, food production systems, and the interactions between agricultural systems and environmental health. Studies exploring strategies to enhance agricultural productivity while preserving natural resources and ecosystem services are strongly encouraged. Contributions linking agriculture with nutrition, food security, climate resilience, and One Health outcomes are particularly relevant.
Section V — Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Conservation
This section focuses on the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss on human, animal, and environmental health. The journal seeks contributions addressing climate adaptation, climate resilience, ecosystem restoration, conservation biology, habitat management, biodiversity protection, ecological sustainability, and sustainable natural resource management. Research examining the effects of environmental change on disease dynamics, ecosystem services, food systems, and community well-being is encouraged. Studies that provide innovative solutions for mitigating climate-related risks and conserving biodiversity while supporting sustainable development are especially welcome.
Section VI — Infectious Diseases, Zoonoses, and Antimicrobial Resistance
This section covers emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases affecting humans, animals, and ecosystems. Areas of interest include zoonotic diseases, disease ecology, pathogen transmission, outbreak investigation, surveillance systems, pandemic preparedness, biosecurity, antimicrobial resistance, infection control, and global health security. The journal welcomes research that improves understanding of disease emergence, transmission pathways, prevention strategies, and response mechanisms. Studies addressing integrated approaches to infectious disease control and antimicrobial stewardship within the One Health framework are particularly encouraged.
Section VII — Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies
This section explores the application of innovative technologies to address complex One Health challenges. Topics include artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, remote sensing, geographic information systems, bioinformatics, digital health technologies, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring systems, robotics, and decision-support tools. The journal encourages interdisciplinary research demonstrating how advanced technologies can improve disease surveillance, environmental management, healthcare delivery, agricultural sustainability, and evidence-based policymaking. Contributions highlighting ethical, social, and practical considerations of emerging technologies are also welcomed.
Section VIII — Policy, Governance, and Sustainable Development
This section focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies that support health, environmental sustainability, and societal resilience. Areas of interest include health policy, environmental governance, international cooperation, risk management, sustainable development, science communication, education, stakeholder engagement, and institutional frameworks. The journal welcomes research examining policy effectiveness, governance mechanisms, capacity building, and strategies for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Studies that bridge science, policy, and practice to address global challenges through interdisciplinary and evidence-based approaches are particularly encouraged.
